HANG SENG INDEX A market value weighted index of the stock prices of the 33 largest companies on the Hong Kong market.

HEDGE Protective measure intended to reduce the risk of loss resulting from price fluctuations.

HEDGE FUND These are funds usually used by wealthy individuals and institutions that allow aggressive strategies that are unavailable to mutual funds. These strategies include selling short, swaps, arbitrage, and derivatives. The minimum investment is typically quite high and can be upwards of a minimum of $1 million.

HIGH CLOSING An illegal method of artificially inflating the market price of a stock by purchasing large quantities of that stock a few minutes before the end of a particular reporting period, either at quarter end or year end.

HIGH-TECH STOCK Stock in a technology sector, such as software, semiconductors, networking, or biotechnology.

HIGH YIELD BOND Sometimes referred to as a junk bond, these bonds normally have a rating of BB or lower and pay a higher yield to compensate for their increased default risk.

HOLDING COMPANY A company that has control over other companies through ownership of a sufficient proportion of those companies' common voting stock.

HOT ISSUE A stock that is in high demand, normally an IPO.

HOUSEHOLD INCOME The combined income of all workers in a household.
